Ken Stewart is part of the founding group and the current president of the Fitzroy Beef Farmers Co-operative. In 2005, responding to the border closure which prevented Canadian beef from entering the U.S., he with 3 volunteers and 16 farmers joined forces to develop a local market for their beef.
The members of the Co-operative are dedicated to producing high-quality, lean beef products. The cattle are raised on small, family-operated farms, where they are free range pastured in summer, fed locally grown hay or haylage in winter, finished on locally grown grain and receive no artificial growth hormones or antibiotics in the feed. The cattle are raised responsibly and with respect. “Food you can feel good about,” is the motto confidently expressed by the Fitzroy Beef Farmers Co-operative. The Fitzroy Beef Farmers Co-operative is recognized by consumers, caterers and restaurants throughout the Ottawa Valley for their prime quality, government-inspected, local beef.
