Courtyard Restaurant

Michael Hay, Chef
Genevieve Rochon, General Manager
Courtyard Restaurant

Michael Hay is a Kingston native and credits his expertise to “training the old school way, apprenticing with great people,” as well as studying at culinary school.  He worked at Gusto in Kingston, Deerhurst Resort, Moto in Chicago, and Black Cat here in Ottawa before becoming Chef at the Courtyard in 2008.  Proud to be part of a group of young Ottawa chefs interested in sustainability and environmental issues, Michael Hay notes that “chefs have a responsibility to ensure that people eat well both literally and figuratively.”

The Courtyard restaurant has been a downtown Ottawa attraction for over 28 years.  Housed in an 1837 limestone building, each of the three dining rooms is available to regular clientele and can be reserved for private parties.  The cobblestoned courtyard is open in summer and features live music on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. The Courtyard menu when possible reflects the seasonal harvest of local products that are in their prime, prepared “with a respect for our ingredients, our suppliers and the techniques both old and new that we readily embrace.”  The result is the “good, honest food” that is Michael Hay's passion.

The Courtyard has developed relationships with local producers and Michael Hay is especially interested in finding and utilizing local products that are underused.
